The Institute for Environment and Resources was established according to decision No.4641/GD-DT of the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) in October 24, 1996 as a member of the Vietnam National University - Ho Chi Minh city. The Institute was established based on the Center for Environmental Technology - CEFINEA (founded in 1898 as a member of the Ho Chi Minh city University of Technology. The role of the IER in the organization structure of the Vietnam National University - Ho Chi Minh city was confirmed in the Decision No15/2001/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister about organization of the Vietnam National University - Ho Chi Minh city, dated 02/12/2002 .
